. ~ "'.<>/ v • HUTT RIVER BOARD. ' Throe members attended tho meeting of tho Hutt River Board 'last evening—Messrs, R. Stevens (chairman). A. Peters, and Hubert Sladden. Tho inspector reported that another sub-; merged'groyne—tho third—had been put iu at Jorgensen's Bend. Two floods had. occurred during tho month of April, on tho 11th and tho 23rd, and tho height of tho river on those dates had been sft. 6in., and Bft. 6in. respectively, above, summer level.' Tho second flood had been the severest experienced since the protective works had been erected. The banks had stood the strain remarkably well, aiid no damage had occurred except at two fillings, where slight settlements -were noticed. Tho groynes and diversion cuts had given, Satisfactory : results. Above the Hutt Bridge a floodgate became obstructed, and was responsible for tho flood, water getting through into tho water ,chan-' nel of the main'road. It would be necessary to place,an'iron guard on this gate to prevent another obstruction. Mr. Pitcaithly's loading bank on Kingdon's beach -had been washed away by the 'flood, and tho railway line: on the beach was badly damaged. Only one tender was received for carting —that of Mr.-J? H. Gosso —and it was accepted. . _ • ■ . , Petone, Borough Council complained of the erosion of lands at their' sanitary . depot. The erosion had been caused by the diversion of the Hutt River. The board resolved to inform'the council that erosion would not take place in future, and to forward'a copy' of the engineer's report bearing on the matter. . The engineer, Mr. Laing- Meason, reported that the. groynes had done excellent ■■work. The efficiency of the boom and submerged groynes had been shown.especially.at Jorgensen's protective works, which formerly suffered much damage by every flood. On this occasion, they had been practically immune.' The two submerged groynes at Kayes's had given excellent results. ' Some. deposit' had taken place at tho mouths of both diversion; cuts. This, ho. bad anticipated, would be the caße until his scheme of gradual diversion was further, advanced. In all other respects both cuts had been improved, both in width' and depth.
