INDUSTRIES WEEK IN WELLINGTON. EXCELLENT DISPLAYS ■ "Wherovor.two or three (or more) gather gother before a shop window just now,' one may guess .without muoli laboured thought that an exhibit of localiy-ijiado goods is tho attraction. Many such groups wero noticed yesterday,- 'denoting that tho public is taking an, interest in tbe many, fine displays that are being made in the city shops., Following will :bo found, descriptions of several of tho. special displays that are being made in hon--lour of "Industries Week." i STEWART, DAWSON, AND CO. Most poople are under the impression that the ' jewellery : they wear is all imported— perhaps it is, but there is absolutely no reason why it should be so. It is a fact, hqwevcr, that -jewellery,' silvers'mithiug, etc.,: can be executed in first-class style in New Zealand, and, at the same time, at . prices: that allow, the local article to compete with] imported goods. An exemplification of' this is' tb' be': s&n - in ; the /windows ,of Messrs. Sto\v'art,,-Dawsgn; and Co., at tho' corner of Lambton Quay and Willis Street. .Looking at the shop from the sfcroet, a pleasant and inviting prospect meets the- eye, and it cannot be :denica :that the contents of the windows, containing "Own Make" articles aro attiacting a great deal of public ■ attention, lhe most conspicuous articles are rings of all descriptions and prices and of most pretty designs.' A.' turquoise-necklet also-evok;ed a considerable amount of admiration. One of the most beautiful and striking exhibits was a. handsome'diamond "bird" brooch, a floral design of two birds composed of diamonds of varying sizcj/ tho whole set most attractively in platinum.'. A novelty was a -ring, or rather a series .of thin rings conneotea, making a very pretty ornament like an Oriental design." Among tho other attractions in the ,w ell-prepared window were amethvst stono brooches, a turquoiso matrix .necklet /set pretty pendants, dia- - mond, rings, cte.' The process-of attaching the diamonds to, the ring is very interesting, .and, intricate,'and it involves tho use of a pair of 'scales delicate enough to distinguishone Ststy-fourth:of:a carat. The stones aro' laid, oil little trays, oontaming perhaps 100 .wO, as : .they ,arnvo from Homo, sorted out by. fine pincers and graded. A' contro Stone;is chosen, I ', then the one to be placed beside it, which has to bo matched on the other, side. When tho matching and grading aro dono, the' stones aro weighed. . Some' nngs ,' contain . "stones weighing from- half a carat to two carats altogether, the latter Wight only, applying of.course to the better cl » S3 iT'ngs. Diamond tings aro ma'do up from ±.6 10s,-to £150. All the stones are brought ifrom tho cutters -at Amsterdam to Ilatton .Uardens,".coming direct to Wolliugton from the firm s London 'offices. There are thus no middlemen's profits to be paid at London, and the ; firm , is' .thus able' to ; make ...rings (/hoaper than undor ordinary circumstances. '.' i -; . HENRY FIELDER AND CO ' Messrs. DISTRICT COURTS,'
PROTEST AGAINST ABOLITION. i Lbr TBLSoitAru—l'hes3 association.l HoUitlKa, May 13. Tho '.Vostland 'Law Society has passed a senos of resolutions protesting against the propqsed abolition of District Courts. As tlioie »ro' only two sittings of the Supreme Court in. the year, and 110' resident Judge, it is-held that tho District Court is indispensible, owing to their quarterly • sittings, especially'.,when dealing with bankruptcy eases and'mining appoals. It is also a convenience to the general public . and legal practitioners, as, it sits at tho five principal towns quarterly. . Moreover, tho plenary powers conferred on,clerks of tho District Court ere hold to be of great'benefit. It was finally resolvod to protest strongly against the abolition of District' Courts by proclamation, without referring such an important question to Parliament. The society also .considered that tho proposed abolition was' not . only, unconstitutional, but also illegal. 1 ,■' : ;-' ■ y.
