These increases have amounted to an average of £11,000 each year since 1904. If tho Government are able, while maintaining the necessary efficiency, to make reductions in the present expenditure, it in their intention to reduce tho aVcragoincreaso by at least fourfifths, or a reduotiori of about £2000 on the amount of the previous year. Tho Minister in oharge of the Department states that it will bo recognised, of course, that with the absolute necessity for appointing additional conI stables throughout Now Zoaland.as population extends, to keep down expenditure to almost its present figures involves strict economy. . i .
