IRISH EMIGRATION
• According to tho statistics recently issued ■tho number of emigrants (natives of Ireland) who left Irish ports during 1908 was the lowest on record since 1851. There wore:— Males .... ... ... - 10,480 Females .... .12,815 ; Total ... ... 23,295 ■ This 'represents a. rate of 5.3 per' 1000 of the population of Ireland "estimated to the middle of the year 1908, the lowest rat© rein previous years being 7.0 per 1000 in 190 a, when 30,676 persons were reported to have emigrated. In the' preceding year, 1907, there were 39,082 emigrants, representing a • rate of emigration of 8.9 per 1000 of the population of Ireland, estimated to the middle of the year 1907. The emigrants in 1907 exceeded those in 1908 by' 15,787; the number of emigrants in 1908 is also below the average of the preceding five years by 13,064. ~ In addition to tho emigrants, who were natives of Ireland, 657 persons of other nationalities emigrated from Ireland last year.
