Tho second series of contests in tho Wed- ;.: nesday championship compertition was played =; on 'the; Athletio Park yesterday\ under weather .conditions; thougli not interfer- .: ing : with players, made watching an' unpleas- ■: ant occupation. A keen southerly blew right across tho ground, and, fairly froze all who. ,: were not constantly, on tho move. The more . interesting'of the two games was tho contest between Stars -. and .' Oriental,' in' 'which the former were tho victors by 13 points. As ./■'an':oshibrtio"nVbf-.;fobtbaU,''-^me.'o , match' . . STARS v! ORIENTAL. Tho contest ' between , Stars .and Oriental wont from tlio beginning almost, wholly in favour of liho former team. The first score was when Stars got a passing rush on from :half-way,: and,KilJeon putting in a good run , arid beating /'several. men,; got ; over tho; line ' after a fine pieco.of work. His try was con-. verted by Hunt. ■ A littlo while. afterwards : : Greeks had' an unsuccessful attempt; to place a ponalty goal. - Ho was more, successful a . little later, ,when : with -a; : splendid kick ho ' added'tho major points to a try secured by' ■ Lauoni.;; : Just before half-time a / forward rush, headed by Ro'sc'oe, failed by a hair to again increase the" Stars' . lead. • When the ; ; spell was taken tho spores'■ were—Stars ; 10, Oriental' nil.
:■; '.In the "second half tho play was much the Bame, though Oriental defended a'little hotter.'".Forward tactics and-passing: rushes of a somewhat straggling;: nature -kept tho hall constantly "near tho Oriental goal-lino. Once or twico it wont over; but on each occasion a Black and -White-man reached it before, any of his opponents. :v'A{:very oreditable attempt was a good sprint down tho field by Hunt/ He passed too soon,, however, with the result that his companion, Killeen, was tackled only a cotiplo of yards from the line; With but'five minutes, to. go -before tho call of time,-the,third try for Stars was scored, by Gosling, who picked - up. from some loose play near.;the:lino ; and 'got' over.j; The .kick at goal was unsuccessful, a little while later the: game .ended with the' scores— ■ ■■ Stars ... ... ... ... 13 . . From that timo "on the order of _ play was reversed, and Tramways several times compelled their .. opponents tosave by forcing: down.. At half-timo the score had not al- • tere'd, Butchers retaining ;their.; three-points', load. ' After tho spoil Tramways camo to light with good effect, Diamond securing' a try, which equalised tho soores. -The major .points .were not added, : and. for : the rest of the spell the play was of a harum-scarum nature; ;not much asan-exhibition/of Rugby, but jjrovid- ; ing plenty of amusement'for spectators.
