Practically'all hope has'now been given' up regarding tho f ato of Harry Douglas Jackson,', aged 16, a son of Mr: Ralph Jackson/ of Nelson, and Mr. William Lightbahd, sen., of Brightwater, who have been missing, with a Canadian canoe,' at Rabbit Island since Wednesday. Information was received by the police here this morning that Patrick Riloy, single, aged '24, a navvy working at Kawatau, near -Mahgaweka, while riding last night with two mates to camp, disappeared over a cliff into, the rivor. Riley rode behind the others, who received the first. intimation of his loss by tho riderless horse joining them. The men went back, and heard Riley call out from the river, but could not got to him owing to tho high cliff. They went for police assistance. A search was promptly instituted, but was unavailing. It was renewed at daybreak, but so far without result.. :'. ■':...'• .-: BURNED TO DEATH. . .., : . Dasent), Councillors Cathie, Spiers, Walmsley, Stnnden, Welling, "HUdreth, Burn, and Wedde. . . - It was resolved that the Minister in charge of the Valuation Department be written to protesting against the proposed alteration in regard to valuing whereby local bodies havo to do this work for. themselves. ■ . : A number o£ minor road improvements'and extensions, were authorised, and it was deoided that a concrete retaining wall be erected, at a cost of 10s., in front of the Council Chambers to prevent further erosion of the bank. > , ' ■ :- .■ ' It was reported by the engineer that the recreation ground works'authorised on April 14 had been completed. ■'■■■■■« ,Tho By-laws Committee., was mstruoted to consider and report upon the advisability of framing sanitary by-laws. . ■' Councillor Wedde asked if the Finance Committee had considered the question of obtaining a rebate from the City Council in connection with the lighting by arc lights, the property o£ tho Karori Council, of the tramway track as far as the tunnel..
