The House of Commona ' discussed the liquor resolution, covering forty exciso duties, as proposed in the Budget. There woe an animated discussion on the lines of recent public criticism. The Opposition warmly resented tho Government's attempts to closure the debate. ..'.'■'. ; .Tho Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr. liloyd-Georgo, announced that he waa considering a now scheme of hotel and grocers' licenses. In defending . the now brewers' licenses—which hitherto have been issued at a fee of £1 a year—ho stated that; henceforth there would be a charge of 2Jd. per barrel of 76 gallons, whereaa'tho brewer's profit was 10s. to 14s. per barrel. ■ : "The Times" says tho Budget is undergoing considerable modification as the result of the criticism since its introduction. Cabinet has reconsidered the diversion of the old sinking fund to a development fund. Some Ministers oppose the establishment of an ad hoc authority, and prefer that the sums should be voted to the Board of Agriculture, the Local Government Board, or tho Board of Trade, those- boards having staffs capable of administering such grants. . . . ■: . . i \; EXAGGERATION.
