The oven tenor of ■ police-barrack life- was disturbed on Monday'night through tho ' alleged misbehaviour of a pair of constablos who are reported to have overstepped the bounds of evon- the average civilian indiscretion., ■ ■-■■' -, ■ ■' ■ • As far as can ; bo gathered, three of the constablos stationed at t'ho Lambton Quay station wore spending their off timo out of doors on Monday night, whoa troublo arose between two of the party and the third member. A brawl is alleged to have taken placo in tho vicinity of tho Post with tho result that the combination of two got' tho third man down in tho stroot. This, undignified as it is, is not the worst phase of the brawl, which might havo ended there I but, for the fact that a man, who wae passing with a lady, interferred, and protested aga-inet tho two-to-ono assault, fh© ( allegation is that tho.two constables.in the attapking party resented the-'interference,, and imniediately assaulted tho man, ima also dcliboratoly or accidentally etruck tlie lady on tho faco, bruising liet cheek below tho oyo and knocking. hoi down. The screams of tho woman attracted a largo number of pcoplo, and a consUhlo in uniform coming on tho-scone, took tho matter in hand. The result'.was that tho man and tio woman allowed to have-been assaulted wore asked to go to tho Lambton Quay police and place the matter beforo tho authorities. They gave full written' statements of.their.sfdo of tho case. . '■ \ ■: Aβ soon as Inspector Ellison was apprised of tho facts of, tho brawl ho immediately sont for the constablos, who wore then on night duty, and suspended them until tho matter has boon fully settled, -..■' .-..'■■. The whole case was investigated yesterday, and as a result two of tho three constables will bo charged at the Jlaßistrate's' Court at 2.15 this afternoon with haying unlawfully assaulted tho man and..woman- in question ; -Inspector Ellison will conduct tlio cflso for ,bho prosecution, and ; Mr. Wilford; will np. pear for 1 tho 'defence.; : ■•'■■ .; -i\;-• ■■'•■
