NOTES AND COMMENTS. [By Glencoe.] The Autumn meeting of the Ashburton Comity Racing Club takes place to-morrow and Thursday. In .connection 'with next Saturday's pony races, owners aTe reminded that-acceptances for the Victoria niid Huia Handicaps closo at noon to-morrow, Maidi gave Master Douglas 51b. and a boating'-, in'tho Kimbolton Hurdles, one mile and three-quarters, at Feilding at Easter time; Since then Maidi' has not started,' but Master Douglas has won a flat race ,and two hurdle raoes, and now he has to concede Maidi lib. in the Century Hurdles, two miles and a distance. . In.his last three attempts Aorangi has notrun up to form, and_ it inay be that he is off colour, but, considering his double win at the Manawatu Summor meeting; ho would appear to be well treated at Wanganui. ' Rangihaeta, Auratua, Maharanui, and Golden Glow, four of the Century Hurdles candidates, will bo competing in the Tongahoe Hurdles at Hawera to-morrow. Auratua andMaliaranui have both been schooled by O. Cochrane,_ and Maharanui is said to show, great aptitude for the business. . Rangihaeta has to date started in five hurdle races', winning.twice, and being placed in'each of his! other starts.' If Kairoma, North Head, and Master Douglas be excepted, he is, perhaps, the most promising of this year's recruits to | the hurdle, ranks. ■ Tho Advanco colt, : Dr.. Shimose, who has I been spelled for closo on six months, is among the acceptors at the Egmont Racing Club's ' winter meeting to-morrow.: His engagements include 'the Railway Handicap, Tawhiti ■Scurry, and Telegraph Handicap. . Nominations for all handicaps at the South Wairarapa Trotting Club's meeting close at 9 p»m. on Thursday, May 13, with tho secretary, Mr.' W.-Armstrong, at the Club Hotel, Greytown. Nomination forms are obtainable on application to tho secretary. . : Gipsy' Belle, 7st. 121b., is nicely weighted in the* Borough Handicap at the Wanganui meeting, but. as sho fliiishod unplaced in the Railway Handicap atTrentham, in which she and Mon Ami both carried 7st. 131b., and as Mon; Ami, who . won that event, has only Bst. x slb. at Wanganui, Gipsy Belle could scarcely have been asked to carry more than 7st. :121b ; " The distance of th.e Borough Handicap, six. furlongs,; appears to be just, a' trifle, beyond the Stepniak maTe, who usually runs better when there is only five furlongs to be traversed. An a own sister to .Dawn "is now. being handled in . the Karamu stable, and she. is said to bo one of tho best-looking members of Waddell's team, but sho has a splint, and there is a doubt as to her standing a pre- •' . .'. .. . Doublo betting is not likely to bo brisk over tho. Wanganui jumping oveiits, until the acceptances become known next Tuesday. At tho present itimo the fields are-altogether too large to make the.backer's task easy. Sol ran second in the Great Northern Hurdlc3 last 'year, carrying 10st., and a couple of days later acted as runner-up in the' Great' Northern Steeplechase, carrying 12st.' 51b. is engaged in'both events' again-. this year, having '41b. more to carry in the hurdles and 31b.. less in the steeplechase. Considering that he won the Sperry Steeplechase at the Fleet meeting in August with 12st. : -121b. % tho saddle, Mr. "Morse does, not appear to have: dealt harshly with the son of Sonlt. "- 1
■ At the Ashburton meeting to-morrow the West Coast sportsman, Mr. Donellan, has North; Polo and Ito. entered for different events, and the appcai-ance of this pair at the, meeting should , add interest to tho, racing. Ito put; up a splendid performance at Wanganni two years.- ago,/when' lio beat Frisco, Volume, Grand Slam, and Tangimoana in the Wanganui Guineas, and' since, going to the West Coast, he' has been a good winner for Mr. Donellan. ' 'Shuja, who wac galloped oil during the running of the Summer Handicap at Dannovirke in December, is - still on the easy list, but Ko is said.to have made a good recovery from his injuries. Shuja gave great promise in the summer, and it was unfortunate for his owners that' his career was checked at the time it was, • but -by all accounts the Soult colt will bo quite fit to race again when the spring comes round, and lie shouldthen make up for'lost time.'
