, LORD BERESFORD ON THE INQUIRY. DEFERRED BURDENS. CONFIDENCE IN THE COMMITTEE. (by TUIEQEiPH—PBESB ASSOCIATION—COPTBIQIIT.) . London, May 9. Admiral Lord Charles Beresford, speaking at tho Liverpool Town Hall, after receiving tho. degreo of Doctor of Laws, said the Committee' on Naval Defence, now sitting, was as fair a committee.as had over been summoned before. If tho members of' that oommittee found that things wore not as they should be —which ho had no doubt thoy would—there would be no necessity for panic or recrimination. "Let us," ;said the Admiral, "return to the old British stylo—lay the whole thing on tho. table, look .at , it, see where it. is wrong, and calmly .. and quietly, put it right, without recrimination from parties or individuals." In another speech at the. Southport Physical Training College, Lord Beresford: said he had great faith in Mr. Asquith's oommitteo. There wo'uld be many points in regard to the Navy destined to become public'and cause dissatisfaction, bnt, let them bury party, got together, and put thingß right. No party wanted to seo the foreigner here. Ho did not belong to the party in. power; but Ministers wore taking a national view of naval affairs, and anything he could do to help thorn he would; to the .best of his ability. : "What has happened ■. is,"'-■ • said■■-Xord Charles, "that wo havo deferred our liabilities and obligations, and when an individual or a nation' does that it must get money somewhere to put himself or itself right."
