The question of the value of day labour, against contract ;■ labour, was debated again yesterday morning at tho Manawatn Land Drainago Board' meeting. Mr. Prouso. wanted to' know when tho day labour men were to be put off the Whisky Creek drain job. Ho had noticed that there was considerable tlackening off in their work, and ho took exception to the fact that the man iin charge mostly, had his coat on. Messrs. Voss and. Collis • considered that a man in chaTge.of a gang of seven or eight men would' se/ve his employer best by not working, but simply supervising, .The engineer said that the men were doing well, as tho job was a particularly difficult one. A deputation was eventually appointed- to view the work and consider tho. advisability of continuing it. '•■■■ ; ' ■ .The usual, number of deputations visited the Manawatu' Drainage Boaid yesterday, the approach of-the wot season reminding ratepayers of the desirability of obtaining cutlets .for surplus water. A well-Mown farmer, whosb coming to the board heralds the approach of, winter as .surely as 'the swallow ushers summer in, was again in evidenceyesterday .morning. ' The board listened patiently to his familiar complaint. When it decided to do nothing, he retreated uttering threats about legal proceedings.' Two other deputations, with less exacting demands, managed, to gain tho sympathy nr; the board, and their requests. were favour-' ably considered. .
