CHAMPION BUTTER COWS.

SYDNEY VERSUS WELLINGTON. Tho butter-fat contest at the Sydney Royal Show gives perhaps a good criterion of the best that they have around Sydney in butterfat cows. It is, therefore, interesting to all how they compare with the best that wo have around Wellington. The Sydney cows were judged on three days' produco, but at tho chief shows—Manawatu, Mastorton. and Wairarapa —the dontests covered different periods and were -judged by soveral different methods of pointing. For comparison, a common basis is necessary, and we therefore have tlio results to the basis of four days' milking, with points awarded as follow :■ —On© point for owry 101b. of milk, and 25 points for every pound of butter-fat. On this basis ' the various groups of competitors compare as follow. Tho letters after tho names indicate tho breed, namely :—A) Ayrshire;- S,-shorthorn; J, Jersey; G. Wales, aud possibly fetter than anything: in all Australia. . " • rt ; . l , ' It is worthy of note in the Sydney records that, .contrary, to usual' expectation, the Guernsey orossbred gave more milk and less butter-fat than the, pure shorthorn. It is of course merely another proof of tho wide variation in individuals of a'breed. i Tho Ayrshire shorthorn, gave the heaviest milk yield on the lists', .but the New Zealand cows beat her heavily on the test.
