« SEVERE EARTH SUA": IVZIZ '.T:.3. REMARKABLE RECORDS. (BT TELEGRAM—PBESS ASSOCIATION—COPrB lOnT.) (Rec. April 30, 0.30 a.m.) Sydney, April 29. A very severe earth tremor was regisat the Observatory shortly before midnight on April 27. It was preceded by two smaller tremors. Tho maximum nmplitudo was 15 decimal .8 millimetres. Largo waves oontinued for nearly fivo minutes. Some of tho series of succeeding waves readied sis millimetres. Tho cpicentrum of tho earthquake was 2000 or 3000 miles north from Sydney, probably in the seismic zone embracing tho Philippines ' and surrounding islands [In seismology the epicentrum js any point on the earth's surface from whion earthquake waves sum to go out as from a centre. It is situated directly abeve tho true centre ot disturbance or seismic focus.]
