KELBURNE RIFLES

The Kelburne Rifles, under command of Captain Davis, V.D., carried out a week-end camp on Saturday last at Happy Valley, there being a good muster of the company present. The company paraded at 2.30 p.m. at the-Garrison Hall, and marched, via .Brooklyn, with two machine guns and transport wagon, to the Valley. On arrival at the outpost line, the guns were entrenched, and 'the' lino strongly held. Camp was pitched, and the general routine gone through undo;? service conditions, sorvice firing being carried out from both guns,and excellent practice was made at ranges commencing at 700 yards, and increasing to 2300(yards. All kinds of fire were practised, i.e., deliberate, rapid, rapid traversing, and raking. At dawn on Sunday, the scouts having reported all clear, the N.CO.'s and men were exorcised in 'carrying out schemes in connection with the machine guns,. judging distance, etc. This was done by the orders of the 0.0. District who visited the camp on Sunday, and who expressed himself well pleased with the work. The camp was struck at 1 p.m.,'and the march to headquarters . commenced at 2. p.m., via beach and Island, Bay, a halt being called at the Presbyterian Church, Island 1 Bay, where the company attended-Divine service, at the invitation of tho Rev. Mr.Shirer. Headquarters were reached at 4.30 p.m. Staff-Sergeant-Major Rose was present during the camp, and gave valuable instruction to the corps in held and camp work. At the parade of the company on Tuesday evening, there being a very good muster, the O.C. took the opportunity of presenting the ma-, chine gun badge to the following eight members of the company, viz., Sergeants NMacaulay, Cole, and :Munroe, Corporals Stewart, and Kirk. Privates Bade. Butcher, and Pettigrew. Eight badges, carrying .with them a personal payment of £1 each, are allotted to each machine gun company, to bo competed for annually, this company obtaining the full number allotted.
