The traffio manager pointed out that if such , gates were erected, the authorities would be able to control the crowds'which usually assembled oh the arrival of-'a- steamer, and on ', .other occasions'. If. something.. in "this" direc- •' tion were not done, . .some., serious casualty '• or would' take place-in the future, ■ The chairman (the Hon. ,E., ,Mitcnelson) ; thought, that the boar -dshould.consider the . matter very-seriously.'; In j Wellington they had gates on. the wharves which had proved very useful. ':■ The'inspector of. police, in ■■' conversation with him the other day, had pointed out that it was, not .only advisable that gates should bo'placed on thev:wharves for use in the ,day time, but also 'it night. : It ~was at, night that most' of the' pilfering [ was-done. He (the speaker), thought it' i would be a good thing. The eni gineer was instructed to report. upon the ,• cost of placing iron gates at the entrances ! to the Queen Streot and Railway wharves, r and wooden gates at the entrances to tho Hobson Street and Quay Street wharves.
