MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.
DR. NEWMAN AT BERHAMPORE. Dr. Newman addressed a meeting of electors at Palm Glove, Berhamporc, Mr. P. J. 0 Regan bfcing in tho clntif. Aftor referring to his .past experience in municipal and other forms of • government, the candidate said that, if elected, ho would endeavour to keep - expenditure within reasonablo bounds, not by retrenchment noi by parsiiriony, but by feconomy, whifcli. Would liot be at tho expense of efficiency. Already thd rates were heavy, Mid'there was 'no need to inako them heavier by raising further loans. Proper provision should bo mado in tlio case of Bucli enterprises as. tho tramways for depreciation j payment for cars, and reserve for accidents. If elected, ho would , also push on Vigorously the public works prograhiMo already sanctioned by tho ratepayers, including -tlio oxjiendituw of £40,000 ori the Wadestowri tramway, arid £22,500 on_ tlio water supply for Wadestown and Northland, Tho spending ,of thoao sulns, and otlier sums remaining on, account of loans previously raised, would bo a factor in relioving unemployment during the winter, and ho thought that this was a that should receive tho serious consideration of tlio new Miiyor, Though tho cost of tho work was ii triflo higher when carried out in the winter, yet that wwt a small .consideration whon they considered tho distress which accompanied' unomployriierit.
