During his. visit ,to Napier, Dr. Findlay has practically traversed tho electorate under tho direction of the member for the district, Mr. J. Vigor Brown. Yesterday morning the Attorney-General paid a visit to tho Tangojo wash-out and tho Esk River ford, whilo, in tho afternoon he inspected tho gaol. This morning he was driven, through Meeanec and Pukotapu. ' In an interview with Tns; Dominion correspondent, Dr. JTindlay said that the land at Meeance and the adjacent districts, which is liable to iloods, appeared to be of tho richest character, and ho was much impressed by what had beou said on this matter bv tho member for the district. With regard to Jio urgent necessity of combined action for the purpose of protection works around Pukctapu, ho had been led to observe how littlo settlement there was within eight or nine miles of Napier. Speaking of tho Napier gaol; ho said that at tho present time,tho prison,is: not overcrowded, but it seems.;.that.', recently . the number, of..prisoners reached:- , upwards'' of sixty.. ,The prison-buildings' are very old and: a considerable 'number of cells havo to accommodate, three prisoners.' It' is tho desire. of the Government to adopt the onecell ?:.system:.;:#roughout:;-:the : Dominion. Modern/gaol; authorities: agreo that this is .'desirable for;reformative, and. other reasons.
