LEVIN.
A very large audience assembled in ih<d Levin Town Hall on, Wednesday night, when the annual concert and dance promoted by. the Levin Roman Catholic congregation were held. The object this year was to raise funds to purchase material for the fancy fair to be held in September. ■ A good. programme was submitted, and the performance of Mastor M'Leayoy, a little Iwy of some seven summers, in the song and dance, "Is that Mister Riley?" caused great merriment. The Misses Cook, two little' girls, treated the audience to some very clever dancing. The band and pipers from the Wcraroa Boys' Training Farm played several musical selections acceptably, and songs were sung by Mrs. D'Ath, Misses Wallace and Follae, Messrs. J. Devine, W. J. Caton, M'Beath, D, Stuart Mackenzie, Lancaster, and J. Robertson; duets by Mrs. D'Ath' and Miss Wallace ana by Messrs. D. W. Mathoson ■and M'Beath. An instrumental quartet was given by Messrs. Glackin (banjo), Matheson (mandolin), Carruthers (mandolin), and .Hayfield (piano), while Miss Bromley contributed a recitation. Mr. J. W. Hayfield accompanied the singers. Refreshments were handed round at the close, after which the hall was cleared for dancing. A word of praiso is due to Mr. J. O'Donohue, the secretary, for the general arrangements, and also to Mrs; Birss for attending to the wants of the performers. .. . , ■■ ' ■ ■■"■']■ .- ''.'■■
Great interest is being manifested in the coming fight for seats on the Borough Council. It appears that Mr. P. Hedgman was nominated on Wednesday, but he forgot to hand in his deposit, and so his nomination lapsed. Sir. T. Williams's paper was handed in ten minutes too late, ho being of the opinion that tho nominations were received up till Wednesday evening. ' Mr. Joseph M'Loavoy, father of tho chairman of the Horowhenua 1 County Council, died on Thursday morning at Ohau. Deceased, who was in his 86th year, was formerly in.the 66th Regiment, and , took part in the Maori wars. The first meeting of the newly-formed Social and Literary Society in connection with the Lovin Presbyterian Church will bo held in the church on Tuesday evening, when a programme of vocal-and instrumental music, recitations, and readings will be gouc through.
