Mr. J: Stuart, stating that he could not commence artesian \vell boring for the borough till about six weeks' time. It was decided to reply asking for a quotation for the work. , The Chief Health Officer (Dr. Mason) ' forwarded a copy of a certificate as to the necessity for the erection of a fever hospital i in Wellington' district. Included in the bodies liable for contribution to the erection and maintenance of the institution wns tho Eastbourne Borough Council. Councillor Mackenzjo expressed a' doubt as to whether the Chief Health Officer had the power to order the council, to contribute. People living in tho borough could not make use of the hospital since their pnly means of transit were by steamer, and they were.forbidden to use public conveyances for parrying infectious diseases cases. Councillor Danks pointed out that if they did not contribute to tho hospital in Wellington they would have to erect and maintain -one of their own. Councillor Mackenzie dilfercd from this view. The Health Department did not enforce the transfer of infectious cases to the hospital in small districts, provided the isolation was jood. On tho motion of Councillor Mackenzie, it was resolved that the Chiof Health Officer bo written to, pointing out that the only means of transit from the borough were by steamer, which they could : not use for conveying people suffering from infectious diseases, and, therefore, it was an injustice to ask them to. contribute.
