London,, April 22., The death is announced of the Earl of Sheffield, aged 77. ■ • ■ , A PATRON OF CRICKET. : ' Henry North Holmv'd. third Earl of Sheffield, was-the grandson of the first,Earl,who was President of., the Board of Agriculture,' and t.« '....J-i_i.iiC.-'..iii..\;i' of his time. The third Lord Sheffield was born in 1832, and succeeded his father in 1876. He was educated at Eton, and was formerly an attache at Copenhagen and Constantinople; Ee sat as Conservative M.P; for East Sussex from 1857 tolßos. But Lord Sheffield is best known for. his services as a patron of the national summer game, particularly in. connection with' its . Anglo-Australian aspect. He took an eleven to Australia'in 1802-3, and many Australian cricket visits to Britain'•' have included matches with Lord Sheffield's Eleven as a welcome item. Lord Sheffield was hon. colonel of the Ist Sussex K.E. (Vol.). His Earldom and most of his minor titles are Irish, and ho sat as Baron Sheffield (United; Kingdom).,: He was unmarried, aud leaves no • heir to the Earldom or to his United ' Kingdom Barony. ■ The heir to the Barony of Sheffield of Roscommon is Baron' Stanley■'" of Aldcrley, who was born in 1839. •
