A sorios. of has been brought to light'in Noumea (capital of New Caledonia) by the trial of a,number of persons for the murder of three 1 men in the nickel district. Two of the thrco murdered men, Pouomboufc and Kone, were shot, while their grass huts wore set on fire. The third man was shot on the road. The object of the crimes was to get possession of tho victims' money. One'of tho leaders of tho murderers, who was tho chief assassin of" the band, was an Arab /named Zerniani. He was shot dead by a gendarme. Of those who camo to trial, Arrighi, a Corsican, was sentenced to death. Santa Croco, who planned tho crimes, and Grimaqui, another .member of the band, were sentenced to twenty years' and ten years', penal servitude lespectively.
