'Prices, in consequence, had hardened a further Is. per case for Fraser Eiver lib. flats, whioh Were exceedingly scarce. The trade had, therefore, turned their attention: to Jib. tins, which were in good supply, and for which quotations wero reasonable. The demand for Alaska salmon had been rather quiet, but then several ships had arrived about the same time, and tho greater portion of their cargoes had been distributed to buyers, who had contracted forward, and who had been pressing for delivery. ' • ; Spelter.^—Writing with respect to the re-cently-arranged German spelter combine, the special correspondent ofi the "Financial Times" says that the scheme has an international side, which is of the greatest interest to producers and consumers throughout the' world, The Gorman producers, with whom the idea for an understanding or convention originated, have now succeeded in attaining their main object, which undoubtedly was to secure the effective of their own output and prices. As they are' in. the happy position of being'able to find a market for practically the iwholo of their production at home, it is obvious that they have,everything, to gain and nothing to lose by an arrangoment which would ensure them freedom from the unwelcome competition of foreign producers, and also obviate the necessity for such internecine competition as existed among themselves. Scotch Whisky.—lf tho promise of the present is fulfilled the course . of the. whisky trado in Scotland will'follow that of last year, and show at the end another decrease in the consumption. For the whole of the United Kingdom last year the consumption was 31,413,397 gallons—a decrease of 1,260,900 on the provious year. . Of this, Scotland's shore was 5,518;2G5 gallons—a falling-away of 4GO,SGS. fully a third of the whole. The .now year, as is usual, opened very slack; but the improvement which was expected has not yet set in, Blenders are finding business very dull, the demand experienced being small. In the market for single whiskies there has been quite an active demand for the makes of 1897, 1898, nnd. 1899. and the business put through is computed at several thousands of hogsheads. The buying was initiated by one of the big Glasgow blending houses, and the rest of the blending trade followed on under; the impression that the stock of tho younger bondings of grain spirits will prove inadequate to meet the requirement* of the trade.' Comparatively little business has been done in Highland, malt whisky, the distillers of which have some trouble to keep their plants running.. Tho transactions have been mostly confined to the makes of "1901s, 1902'5, and 1903'5. ; Among tho older bondings 1897's have been'in request, but there is' little doing in'lS9B's. A fair, steady business is reported in Lowland, malts,' the makes wanted being 1902'5, 1903'5, andU9oi's. Tapioca,—Seodi lis. . Gd. j pearl, 15s. • Gd. -per ,owt. ;
