This eample was of a close, hard texture, and glazed on tlio insido and outsido. ' As desired, I .have tested the solubility .of this pipe material in Hydro-, ohloric Acid, under tho following conditions:— After'.removal of nil'the glaze by chipping, the snhiple was -crushed until'all had passed mesh having'6o,holes to the lineal inch, and dried' at 120 ;deg. of..the dry powder V'erfi placed in the, acid, which was of spcoifio gravity 1,089 (45 per cent, of 1-in. acid—Ure's tables),'; in tho ratio of one of. powder to 25 of acid; ' Tho period ofvtesting was (a) 12 hours very 'frequently'stirred, and (b) brought quickly to the boil and, boiled for one minute; Tho residues wero washed 'to the entire removal of acid, and. dried at 120 dcg., the results being as follow.--No, 1 Test (section of R. 0, Clark's ordinary ' 4-inch-Sanitary Pipe). ■ ■. ': 3.48 ;' / Soda , , ... 1.4S .Undetermined'... 0,32 100.00 The above results provo conclusively that our material is of-such exceptional .quality that no other clay in' the Dominion is so suituble for manufacturing hard impervious and thoroughly sanitary pipes. ; .The fact of the body of our stoneware sanitary pipes, being so hard, while the percentage of iron and other soluble ingredients is' smaller than in sanitary pipes mado in any other locality, has insured a; ready and increasing, sale wherever our manufactures have been 1 introduced solely on their merits. • The oold acid tests prove tho Wellington and Christchurch sanitary pipes deteriorate , with sqwago action over .-50 por cent more than our pipes, and Nelson pipes 130 per cent. more.
