LETTERS TO THE EDITOR.
BOXING CONTESTS. Sir, —A monopoly is hold by the Wellington Boxing Association in promoting contests. Wo get about four or fivo hero in twelve months. If they can't givo tho sporting community mo'ro of tho art of self .defence lot some,' private concern tako it over that Mill givo ft decent purse, say, a £100 purso or moro, not tho paltry ono that is given at tlm present time. It is practically right wliafc Billy Murphy said in last week's "Referco": They givo about, one pound ill fifty, and stiff prices are charged for admission. Wo, .tho public, do not mind the charges, providing that tho boxers get a fair sharo of the profits. '. Just fancy giving a £60 purse out of about a £425 house. This cannot be denied. I have known somo of tho opera, companies .to take over £360, and their prices wero not nearly so stiff as those charged by tho Boxing Association. I seo in tho papers that Tommy Burns and Bill Lang aro talking about coming over to New Zealand to givo private exhibitions. Tho paper said: "Wo do not know whether this is in accordance withi tho rules that .govern tho status of •boxing," Boxing is a profession just the, samo as rowing and many-other athletic games.. Surely.wo aro not in Siberia or in some other foreign land, when wo hayo to ask: .what wb can 'do when following our profession or get a permit from the police like criminals.—l am, etc., ■. .
