RAPE OR KALE.
An account of what must be regarded as tin interesting and apparently conclusive tost of tho preference of aheep as to rape and together with a striking photograph illustrating tho test, will be found on pago 6. > , j ——————— > ' ',' BUTTER IN STORE. The quantity of buttor in cold storage in New Zealand ,at the end,of March, as reported by the Dairy Commissioner, amounted to 32,357 boxes, , ,or 859 tons, as against 42/711 boxes, or 1068 tons, on 'tho same date" of last year. -The storage, is distriwted over various centres as follows:— , ' • Boxes. ' • Auckland ' 9,935 New .Plymouth ...' 5,028 , .Patea ' ... " ... - ... 151 Wellington 5,992 '•Lytteiton 2,000 DuneduT ... ■; .'.. 9,251 Total ' ... ... 32,357 - The smallness of tho quantity in' store as compared with the quantity storcdMast year was to be expected, in'view of tho different prospects. , Last year there were drought and bush fires, and a very short and meagre milk supply, , and consequently all parties interested in supplying tho local winter market stored, early fend late, all the butter that became available for that purposo, high prices being imminent. This year tho prospect is for an ample milk supply late into the season, and apparently only, fair prices. Producers and dealers, therefore, in spite of low prices ruling at Home, Eire still exporting freely, anxious to avoid over-supply-ing the local winter market. Some ot the butter now in the stores may not be conx sumed till it is flvo months old; yet it may then be tho best on tho market. This :s oxplained by tho fact that the, buttor produced at this time of year is always superior •to that made in tho winter, and its superiority is not entirely destroyed by the long storage. - A recent meeting of. factory representatives, convened by ' tho \ National Dairy Association, decided in favour of continued liberal exporting. The abundance «f feed' continues to provail in piactically all districts, and the only element that is calculated .to hasten the close, of tho season is the early arrival of .wintry, cold weather. With plenty of food, however, dairy cows san endure a considerable amount , of cold.
