(Tho'Liberal majority in 1906 was 4174 ) Tho voting was asunder.— Mr. Clbson (freetrader) . . 4527 Mr. Herd 1 (tariff reformer) ... 40G9 . Liberal majority 458 TARIFF REFORMERS PROGRESS IN SCOTLAND. Tho 1908 election was, like the present one, a ■dual contest. The fall ,of the Liberal n.ajonty .from 1171 votes to 453 is, therefore, a icmar,';lable slump. It is apropos'to recall that in lanother great Scottish city, Glasgow, a Liberal ■ seat (Central Glasgow) ivas lost 111 Mt'cn last to n Unionist .md tariff reformer, thn Liber il '1006 majority 431 being converted into t Unionist iriajont} of 2113. At Haiuck Burghs last March the Liberal majoiity of 681 was reduce.l to 520. In recording the Unionists' capture of the (Central Glasgow seat, filio "Daily Mail" said:, '"The most remaikabln Unionist success in tho [whole series of by-electidiis has been pi ined «y Mr. Scott Dickson, ,the Unionist candidate, m Central Glasgow, who Has returned last nigh: by tho enormous majority of 2113, thus captur|ing the seat .for Fiscal Reform.
