The success of Irishman in the Oakleigh i'Jato, Hyman in the Doncaster Handicap and Montcam.in the All Aged Stakes, once more reminds us of what a wonderful hrood Sraflty had twelve foals, and no fewer than nine of these were colts. A BOOKMAKER FINED. IBT TKLBOBAPH—I>SESB ASSOCIATION.) _ ,„_, Auckland, April'l6. C. M'Glashan was charged at the Police Court to-day, that on April 10, at Ellorslio racecourse, on which the totalisator was in use, he made a bet on the result of tho Eden Handicap after-the time'of starting for the race. Chief oDetective Marsack said* the charge was laid under Section.34 of tho Gaming Act, 1908. Bookmakers wero licensed to bet on racecourses where totalisators were used, and one of the regulations was that they should not bet after the tune advertised for the starting of a race. Defendant was' a licensed bookmaker. The starting time of the Eden Handicap ' was advertised at 3 p.m., but' it was delayed. At 3.20 p.m. the dofendant accepted a wager from a man on a horse taking part in the Eden Handicap. Mr. London, who npprared for defendant, said the starting times of races were often late. Other bookmakers were betting in doubles nil round him, and he thought he was entitled to go on straight out. The defendant had been under a misapprehension, but had stopped as soon as tho detectives pointed out his error. The Bench said they would lot the defendant down lightly, and inflicted a fine of £5: and costs. . •
