A statement having been mado by Mr. T 5: 1 a y lo . r ), ,¥- p -. tha * about sixty employees pf the Addington Railway Workshops had been'dismissed, Mr. Kichardson, manager of the workshops, was interviewed, and said that ho was not n a position to jnako any Statement, or to givo any particulars regardm tne matter. Ho atatcd, however, that Jur. laylors information was quito correct , as a, matter of fact, tho number cf men who had received notice pf dismissal was nearer one hundred than sixty, and an additional iorty would be reliovod of their duties at the end of tho current month. Fully threo out of four of tho employee dismissed were mar--Mγ- \ E. Taylor, when asked if he had any further information regarding the matter, syd that ho knew nothing more than the bare tact that a very large number of employees were boing dismissed from the Adchngton Workshops, and he know nothing of ' tho reasons which had actuated the Govornmont m taking the stop it had dono. He could only conjecture that this was part of the general scheme of retrenchment mentioned by Sir- Joseph' Ward in a recent speech. s In reply to inquiries, /the Bailway Department state that tho .men who have to eo were only employed for special work, which has been completed. Those men wero taken ' °sji ?i for cortain feed periods. It v-as added that no permanent hands had been dispensed with, except under the superannuation scheme. Large sums of money had leen Bpont during the past year in. connection with the roDrag stock, but tho programme , had nearly been completed and the men yore not needed any longer.
