The jdectrioal companies which generate hydroclootric power from the Fulls ho.vo lost a quarter of a million sterling by fcho stoppago of the power. Wharves and piers are being crushed by the ice, and railways are submerged. The dnnmgo dono is estimated at .-£360,000. Tho steel arch bridge is thrcntoned.
NIAGARA BRIDGES. A suspension liridgo of a single span of SiOK. over the Niagara, connecting with railways of Canada and Now York, was opened in March, Iffn. It was elevated 18ft. on tho CanaiMaii and I 23ft. on the American side. It was superseded by a great new steel arch bridge, the last panel of which was fitted on March 23 and 29. 1897a great engineering feat, constructed by the Pnnsylvanian Steel Company for the Canadian and New York incorporations. There aro at present four bridges crossing tho river About 18 miles below Fort Erie are the remarkable falls. The river is hero 740 yards wide; the halfmile immediately above the cataracts is a rapid, iu which tho water falls 58 feet; it is then thrown, with astonishing grandeur, down a stupendous precipice of 150 feet: perpej.diculav, iu three distinct i>nd collateral sheets; nxd. in 1 rapid tint extends to the dktanco of nine miles below, falls nearly as much more. The rivf.r then flows in a des>p. channel till it enters Lake Ontario, at Fort Niagara.
