Akroyd, of Mangapapa, has been appointed a member of tho Hawke's Hay Land Hoard, vice Mr. Edwin Bartram, resigned. Mr. Antonio T. Traversi has been gazetted Deputy-Registrar of Friendly Societies, a sub-department that has been absorbed by the Treasury Department.' Tho sum of £200 has been granted by Cabinet to Chief Gaoler Armstrong, who recently retired, as compensation for severe injuries received by being struck by a prisoner whilst in the execution of his duty. Mr. Jair.es Thorno has been appointed Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages at Taumarunui. Mr. W. F. Stewart has been appointed Deputy-Registrar at Greytown. ' Tho Wellington friends and well-wishers of Mr. T. K Donne, who is proceeding to London to take up an appointment under .the High Commissioner, intend to entertain him at a valedictory function before ho ■leaves. Mr. Donne has many friends throughout New Zealand, and since tho announcement of his new appointment ho has received hundreds of letters and telegrams wishing him well in his new sphere. Prior to the termination of tho annual conference of the New Zealand National Association of Spiritualists, tho retiring president, Mr. W. M'Lean, was presented with a handsomo oak writing-desk and gold fountain pen, suitably inscribed, in recognition of his services to Spiritualism during the past twentyfive years. Tho secretary, Mrs. Moore, mado the presentation on behalf of tho association, and complimentary speeches were made by leading members. '. Two New Zealandcrs had tho honour of captaining the two rival Rugby teams of Guy's Hospital and London Hospital at a match ,at Richmond last month, and both were presented to tho Prince of Wales, who wVs an interested spectator of tho match between tho two hospitals. L. B. Stringer, of Christchurch, led the Guy's team, and London wore captained by J. M., Mehaify, late of Otago University. They wore presented to tho Prince before the start of the match, and tho two teams lined up in front of the Royal box to welcome the distinguished occupants with a cheer. Mr. .Charles who was thrown, from a trap and killed at Edio's Hill, on Moa Mat, Tapanui, on Monday, was a son-in-law of Mr. J. IC, Logan, Director of Eledtric Lines, who left for tho south on Moilday evening in connection with tho fatality. Mr. Howells, who was auctioneer for Mpssrs Wright, Stephenson and Co., at Invercargill, leaves a widow and threo children. It appears that deceased was riding on,-tho back seat of the- trap, which rattled down the hill at a good rate, aiid it wa/s not. until the bottom of tho grade was peached that the others missed him. They went, back and found him dead on tho road. I/Much sympathy will be felt with Mrs. Howeijs: and Mr. Logan, who, only a. few months ago, sustained a bereavement in tho death of Dr. Logan, of Wellington, who was a son of Mr. J. K. Logan, of this city.
