MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

(Bofdro Mr. W. G. Riddel], S.M.) AN IDLE AND DISORDERLY FEMALE. The police appear to bo making a continued effort to rid the city of certain characters. A middle-aged woman named Nellio Sweenoy, Arnold, pleaded guilty to a charge of having, on April 12, behaved in a disorderly maimer in North Street whilst drunk. A conviction and fine of 205., in dofault soven days' imprisonment were entered. The same accused also pleaded guilty to a charge of being an idle and disorderly person, in law, in that she has insufficient lawful means of support. On this charge accused was convicted and sentenced to'thrco months' imprisonment. Sub-Inspector 'Phair. described the house occupied by accused as tho worst house- in North Street, and a continual source of annoyance to 'the neighbourhood. Accused pleaded for a 'chance to get away to Auck-. land, \but sho was not prepared to go into tho Salvation .Army Home.

EXPENSIVE PUN. On a chargo of stealing a bottle of beer, valued at Is., tho property of Georgo Vagjham 1 ; Ernest Paul Sweeney, who pleaded not guilty, was convicted and fined 20s.', with tho alternative of seven days in gaol. Evidence showed that accused went up to Vagjhanr in tho street, and, taking ono of the two bortles of beer tho latter was carrying, ran away, a constable in pursuit. Accused said that he only took tho bottlo for fun, and did not intend stealing it, but his Worship thought otherwise.

OTHER OASES. A young man named John M'Kewan entered a plea of guilty to a charge of indcconcy in Cuba Street, and ,was convicted and fined £5, in default 21 days' imprisonment. On a charge of insobriety, tho same accused was fined ss. Win. Thomas Marshment appeared on roniand on a charge of indecency, and, on the application of Mr. O'Regan, was remanded till this morning. Marshment was also remanded to this morning on a charge of stealing a pewter pot, valued at 55., tho property of Julius A. Lute. Pleas of not guilty wore entered in each case. Bail was allowed in tho sum of £10 and ono surety of £10. Martin Nelson, charged with insobriety, was convicted and fined 10s., with tho alternative of 48 hours' imprisonment. Two lirst offendors who failed to appear woro each fined 10s.
