In the ■ first race Straban and Lebcccio ?ero the only start-ere. ' Mr. Rcside's mare ost ground at nearly every jump, but she wa3 nuch too fast on the flat for v Straban, who ired considerably. . ; Advantage,, who was looking in splendid ondition, was'selected by the public "to win ho, Rototawai Handicap. The raco appeared 0 bo a sort of exercise- canter for Advantage, fho.was hard held.all ho.way and then won nsily. The heavy going did not suit Andrewlack nor .Conquer, but they ran good races, lussel, who looked almost as fit as Advanage, &nd Iney ran very disappointingly. Knight Commander was tho only scratching 1 the Moro'a, Hack Handicap, leaving a" field •f ten. The race was a gift to Te En, who ;on with hardly an effort. Miss Vera, who .'as supposed to have a good chance, ran well he whole way, but had no chance at the eeights with To Ru. Projectile was about tho best-looking of a omowhat poor lot who contested the Tauherilikau Shorts, but Lady Paul was maclo a rarm favourite. She led by lengths for urlongs, and then (lied away. The inare is ividently speedy, but she seemed'to bo rather iverfed. Projectile, who won cleverly, pulled ip lame. \ ■ ' With the exception of Aberration, all the teceptors started in , the Autumn 'Handicap. Haiora was mado a slightly better favourite ian Effort, both bein« heavily backed, imongst tlie outsiders Silken Rein and Gaelic rerc supposed to have good chances. There i-as a very long delay at the post, and then 'he dispatch was spoilt through tho favourto .being loft-at tho'tapss. Silken Rein, who ;hot out from the barrier with'a good lead, ippeared to have the race won at the end if sis furlongs. After traversing that dislance, however, she tired away very much, md in the straight was passed by both Uerrio, Rose and Gaelic. Effort, who was :ever seen in any prominent position during ho race, pulled up slightly lame. Aema, who was made favourite for the Fuvenile Handicap, got well away, but she vas eased and then passed by Sea Queen, yho was at one time lengths ahead of the icld. Iney, who ran much better than in ier previous efforts, won somewhat easily. soa Queen is evidently still short of several ;a)lops. Rock Ferry ran a very peculiar race in the Stewards' Handicap. Ho was favourite, but vas kept right behind the remainder of the ield until entering tho straight,. when ho •ushed through and won by half a length. Kelso, who was supposed to have a good ihance, got away well, but found the weight ;oo great an inconvenience. Aboriginal, who .vas just beaten in tho last few strides, rail i good race, as did Clem. The last race of the day, the Waiohine Back Handicap, provided the biggest Held— namely, 11 starters. Andrew, Mack, who ivas mado a hot favourite, had all his work 3ut out to beat. Purakau, who is just now ooking particularly fit.
