WAIRARAPA R.C. AUTUMN MEETING. EASTER HANDICAP WON BY GAELIC. Doubtful weather conditions on Saturday morning probably affected tho attendance at the Wairarapa Racing Club's Autumn moeting. Practically jio rain fell round about 'lauherinikau, and the first day's racing passed off pleasantly. Tho "track was in good order, without sting iu the going, and fast times were recorded in several events, lAn. outsider triumphed in tho Easter Handicap in the shape of Gaelio, who was a winner at the recent Nelson fixture. Gaelic's owner-trainer also led in two other winnors during the afternoon. F. Whitehouse received a bad fall off Lebecoio in the hurdle race, atitl was stunned and badly cut about the, face. <! NOTES ON THE RACING. : Dreamy Daniel, who has gone lame, was withdrawn from the To TVhiti Hack Hurdlea, leaving only two starters. Matters wero made easy for Straban, as Lebeccio fell when half tho journey had been covered. F. Whitehouse appeared to come a nasty cropper off the Sou'wester. mare, but his most serious injury was a broken ncse. , Lebeccio was remounted by S. Crawford, and lidden over the remainder of the. course, and sho thus 1 obtained second money, in accordance with | Rule 4, Part XII, of tho Rules of Racing. 1 To Ru was made a firm favourite for tho Maiden Hack laco, and he had a very easy win, being in. front from, the rise of tho barrier. The bay gelding is stoutly bred, his dam, Eider, being by Quilt from a Musket mare, and later on ho should stay as well 'as the best of his' sire's stock. Hilarian, i who ran second, !b improving with every race, and should not bo long in getting on the winning list. i ' All ,tbe accpptors went to the post for the Easter Handicap, Maiora being installed a warm favourite. He was hampered by tho tapes at the start, but half a mile'from home he obtainetl a clear run on the rails, and led into the straight. Ho failed to stay, out the last furlong, and was beaten intho. straight by Gaelic and Effort. Maiora had not been eiven much work since tho Masterton meeting, and should therefore improve with the gallop. Gaelic proved that his win at Nelson was n'ot'a fluko. Ho is a great finisher when - well,; and on 'Saturday oamo from last to first in the concluding three furlongs of-'-the race.- He has now regained his form of the early spring, when ho ran two good races at tho Mnrton meeting. Effort, who is looking wonderfully well, appeared to have a bad run at stages of tho race, and may, therefore, show improvement when next sho starts. Silken Rein disappointed hei 1 -trainer, and was sent out in the Wangaimoana Handicap, later on in the afternoon', when she ran second to San Fer'nando.
It was a poor lot that contested the Hack Welter, and the bookmakers were unable to find a favourite. On th& machine Castiglione carried a little more money than Sealer and Knight Commander. Castiglione led for nearly sis furlongs, and then after Knight Commander and Diplomatic had both looked winners, Sealer, who was nicely ridden by Langstone, came along in the last hundred yards and secured a narrow victory.
, Aboriginal was a slightly better favourite than San Fernando in the Wangaimoana Handicap, but though the black gelding looked well and should have been suited by tho going he failed to run into a place. Daisy Paul was well supported by her owner, but as she had not raced for some time there were doubts as to her seeing the journey out. Price got her well away, and rode her a waiting race in front, but after leading till within twenty yards of the post alio went to pieces, and was passed by San Fernando and Silken Rein. San Fernando had a lucky Tun on the rails, otherwise she would have had troublo from Silken Rein.
Aema was favourite in the Nursery Handicap, with Kiltie Lass and Sea Queen next in domand. Kiltio Lass commenced smartly, and soon had a break of a couple of lengths. She rounded the home bend right on tho rails, and though sho swerved out at the finish, just lasted lone enough to beat Aema W half a head. The official time proves Kiltie Lass to bo possessed of plenty of pace, but she does not stay too well, and when she swerved at tho finish she interforod slightly with Aema. _ Sea Queen might have had a say m tho finish with another furlong to go, and Stepalong and Undecided botn showed pace, but First Consul is very green as yet, and lost all chance at the start. For tho Wardell Handicap, Advantago was a hot favourite with tho bookmakers, but Iney carried most money on tho machine. At the finish nothing had a say with Advantage, who won by three lengths, with a lot in hand. Kelso shaped, badly, the sharp turns being evidently against him. Among the thirteen. starters in the Makam Handicap. Toango was a made a firm favourite, while Leahora carried by far tho most, money of the other candidates. These two had tho finish to themselves, Toango winning by a couple of lengths. Leahora would have made, matters interesting, but sho got a blimp at the start, and then received bump after bump till sho drifted right back to last. Sho put in a fine run in the straight, but it was too late for her to be closer than second. Tho performance, however, stamps tho Lethe filly, as very useful.
