Pony owners arc reminded that acceptances for tho Autumn and Tauliiim'Handicaps, at tho Wellington Pony and Galloway Racing Club's mooting, close a.t 3 p.m. to-day, with tho secretary (Mr. J. M. Gumming). Knight of Malta, a half-brother to tho defunct Pilgrim's Progress, had to Ixv destroyed in England recently. Knight of Malta was 23 years of age. One of tho notablo defections from the open hurdle race on the first day of the Fc-ilding Jockey Club's Easter meeting is Whatakura. It was generally conceded that the Lctlic gelding had a great chaneo with 9st. Sidney Dillon is sire of the four fastest trotters ever sirod by one horse. They are Lou Dillon, lmin. CSJecc; Ruth Dillon (4), 2min. GJsec.; Dolly Dillop, 2niin. GJsec., to wagon; and Stanley Dillon, 2min. 73sec, winner of the M. and M. It appears that tho New Zealand pony, marc, Kusslcy Maid, who had to bo destroyed in Melbourne last week, met with an accident in the Novice Handicap at Ascot, and her jockey, J. Toohey, sustained a broken collarbone. W. M'Lcan, rider of Royal Blue, was held to bo responsible for tlic mishap through careless riding, and was disqualified for two years.
Gold Thread carried Bst. 21b. in tho Stewards' Handicap at Riccnrton, and, after boing one of tho loaders for fivo furlongs, sho faded away and finished seventh. In the Awapuni Handicap, at the Manawatu Racing Club's mooting, sho carried Bst. 81b., and won very easily, Tuimit, Bct. 21b., finishing third. It has been contended that her failure to see out the six furlongs at Riecarton in November was duo to tho. fact that she had not had a race since the Hawke's Bav meeting in October. At any rate, the man"ner in which she won tho Awapum Handicap gave one the impression that sho could run out a mile- if necessary. Of the horses sho defeated in that race, Tuinut is tho only one which sho will meet in the Great Easter Handicap at Rkcarton next Monday. Armlet and Flitaway, who both finished in front of Gold Thread in the Stewards' Handicap at Riccarton, now moot her on 61b. worso terms, In connection with the Wellington Pony and Galloway Racing Club's meeting next Saturday, owners are- notified by advertisement in this issuo that all nomination fees duo must bo paid before tho first raco, otherwise tho ponies concerned will not bo allowed to start. This rulo will bo strictly adhered to. If reports from Mexico aro to be credited, racing will bo revived on a magnificent scale in that country. Concessions have been granted tho proper parties, immense capital will bo put into tho enterprise*?, and the promoters aro sanguino of success. Tho railway companies west of Kentucky havo promised unusual facilities, and it really looks as if tho California legislation against racijig had boomed tho sport instead of killing it. Grenade's first appearance over hurdles is being awaited with interest. Tho Grnfton geldmg was entered at Woodville, and at Mastorton, but did not start at either of thoso meetings. In all probability ho will bo scon out in the Taonui Hack Hurdles at I , eliding next Monday. Advices from England state that tho cxRow Zealand jockey, L. H. Hewitt, was married in London early in February. Tho hurdler Showmnn, who has been off tho scene for some littlo time, will probably malco his reappoaranco at tho Feildinir meeting. b Lucretius, Gaelic, Golden Gate, Thera Vinco i'urakau, and Silken Rein returned irom tho Nolson meeting yesterday, and were railed homo to their various destinations. Bookmakors aro notiiiod by an advertisement in this issue that applications for licenses to bet at tho Miraniar Ponv races on Saturday may bo obtained up till tomorrow afternoon.
PONY AND GALLOWAY RACINC CLUB, CHARITY RACE MEETING. iir A «- a mcctiu S of tho committee of tho Wellington Pony and Galloway Hacing Club held yesterday afternoon, it was decided to hold a raco meeting at Miramar on Thursday, April 22, tho proceeds to bo devoted to Wellington charities. Tho fixture fits in between the first and second days of the Wellington Racing Club's autumn meeting, and aj it is expected that thero will bo a large number of sporting people in tho city at that time, a good attendance should result. In order that the various charitablo institutions should benefit to full extent, no complimentary tickets mil bo issued. Tho programmefor tho meeting appears in this issue, and as will bo seen, it is based on tho. usual lines of the Saturday race meetings The principal event, entitled the Charity Cup is worth 40 sovs., and is to be run over a course of six furlongs. Nominations for all events close at noon on Wednesday next April 14, with tho secretary, Mr. 'j. jl' dimming. Owners will probably do their part to assist in the laudablo movement set on foot by tho management and respond with record entries.
