INADEQUATE MEAT WRAPPERS.
Messrs. Gilbert Anderson and Co., ot London, in a recent letter, made , a comparison between tho meat bags used by the New Zealand exporters, and those- used by Argentina.,"They write: "Tho present bag (for lambs) is altogether too ilimsy for protection, and we- would suggest that the outer bag should be Hessian. For tho-"in-formation of the trade we forward you a bag which has come off River Plato meat —the value of this meat in somo cases bojng half the value of Canterbury lamb. It is worth wbfio noting that tho River Plate people, whoso business is now being- run bj cute Americans, consider it advisable to cover their meat, which is only half the value' per pound, and takes only half the time on tho voyage with a bag which is a cover and a protection. .In a good bag the meat is, so well protected that it reduces insurance claims by a very high percentage. In.'fact, whero this good bag is used, there is generally no necessity for claiming a survey on any parcel of muat so covered." The cost of the Argentina bags is about 7rl. each, and of those in use by Now Zealand about 23d.
