HUTT BOROUGH FINANCE. PROPOSED ENQUIRY. Ia his rcceat meeting at Lower Hutt, Mr. W. H. Russell epoko of the expenditure of the .£52,000 loan, and placod his view of tho borough's financial position before tho ratepayers. Mr, Russoll was assailed on several points, and, when answering questions, remarked that ho was quite willing that tho fullest inquiry should bo made into the municipal accounts during the prosent council's term. Ho was satisfied, he said, that the council had carried out a careful administration, and that their administration of finance would bear the closest oriticism.

One of the other candidates for tho Lower Hutt Mayoralty, Mr. J. T. Hawthorn, advocated, at his meeting on Thursday evening, that a strong committee of ratepayers should bo appointed to look into the expenditure which had taken placo. It is stated that, following up Mr. Russell's challenge, a public meeting of ratepayers will bn called for the purpose ef considering the advisability of instituting an inquiry. Tho council are almost unanimously inclined to favour an investigation, and will give all facilities if application is made to them, but they desire to have somo voico in tho appointment of the commissioner or committee. It is expected that the inquiry will be held before the Mayoral election comes on. JOTTINGS. For the purpose of picking a senior team, a trial match of the Petono Association Club will be held on Maidmonfa Ground this afternoon (3 o'clock). A team: .J. Woolley, J. M'Kinnon, D. Frasor, Ephgrave, G. Robinson, L. Hawkins, 0. Tyne, H. Wright, G. Reynolds, Ingham, and Lyle, B team: H. F. Jackson, L. C. Mitchell, E. Turner, G. Hartley, R. Renai, Fuller, C. Byrne, D. Jones, T. Fitzgerald, Bryant, and E. Hartley. For behaving in a disorderly manner, while drunk, in the main street, Petone, Peter Guthiio was brought before Mr. \Y. Inglis, J.P., at tho Police Court yesterday morning, and fined 205. ( in default seven days' imprisonment.
