THE ALLEGED NUISANCE AT ISLAND BAY.

I • . 1 COMPLAINTS OF RESIDENTS. In connection with an alleged nuisance at < Island Bay due to a cess-pool on 'privato ] premises, reported on and discussed at the last meeting of tho City Council, a Dominion reporter paid a visit to the scene a day | or two ago and discussed tho matter with several residents-. Ho was informed that in j October last complaint was made to tho authorities' without result, and, ; as the ] nuisanco gradually becamo worse, tenants < in certain houses near by gave notico to ' their landlord, who reported the matter to the Health Department. The outcome was that the Public Health Committee of the J City Council brought down the report men- | tioned. Tho reporter ascertained that the occupier of the premises complained of was taking steps to have proper drainage in- s stalled. Pipes were then being carted on to < tho ground, but no excavation had been 0 commenced. Some of the residents ex- £ pressed the opinion that when tho cxcava- • tion was proceeded with, further cesspits 1 would be exposed to view. I In conversation with a Dominion repre- i sentative, an Island Bay resident stated 1 that there wero more cesspits than one. His i chief complaint was that tho presence of r these pits extended over a long period, and ' ' their existence was mado known to' the Melrose Borough officials before tho amalgama- r tion with tho city took place. Complaint was also made to the Chief Sanitary Inspector, but ho had declared that the nuisance aid not exist. One particularly objectionable featuro our informant mentioned was that refuse drained to a cosspit only twenty feet from a public street. Moreover, a bedroom almost overlooked the pit. There ■aro four of these pits within a short distance of the Island Bay Hotel. t Inquiry into tho quostion will be made by a tho Public Health Committee to-night. ' i u
