His Excellency tlio Governor left Rotorua yesterday morning for Tauniarumii. The Hon. R. M'Kenzie is at Wostport, tlio Hon. A. W. Hogg; at Pongaroa, the Hon. T. Mackenzie at Christcliurch, and the lion. A. 'P. Ngata at Rotoma. The other Ministers arc in Wellington. The Hon. J. 11. Callaii, M.L.C., arrived from Dmiodin yesterday morning. Dr. I'omart, Health OlHcer to the Maoris, lias returned from the East Coast district. Sergeant Hastie, of Hamilton, is nt present on a holiday visit to Wellington. The Hon. A. T. Ngata loft Whakatanc yesterday morning for To Toko, and is duo at Uotonia this morning. Mr. Gresley Lukin, who is to attend tile Press Conference in London, will leave Auckland oil April 14 for Suva, there to connect with the Vancouver mailboat. Mr. J. Buckley, of the local staff of tho Magistrate's Court., is at present oil relieving duty in Blenheim. Ho returns hero after Eastor.
Mr. W. T. Glasgow, tlio retiring Secretary und Inspector of Customs, leaves to-day on a visit to Dunedin. Next Thursday ho will leave with Miss Glasgow on a visit to England. The Hon. T. Mackenzie left for Christchurch last iiijjht en route for Ilanmer. Tho Cabinet meotiugs of tho last three days caused him to postpone an intended visit to Tcmulca and 'J'imaru. Sir Joseph Ward will open a new post office at Featherston at noon to-morrow, and another one at Upper Uutt at 4 p.m. Tho Town Board will entertain him at a banquet in tho evening. Tho lion. If. M'Kenzio, Minister for Lands, Victoria, arrived from Sydney by tho Moeraki, to spend a fortnight in Ninv Zealand studying our land legislation. Ho is accompanied by Mr. 11. 0. Allan, an officer of his Department. '' There is reason for thinking that Mr. 15. J. von Dadolszen, Registrar General, who is a year short of the compulsory retiring ago, may retiro at an early date, and that his Department will be' combined with tho Electoral Department, under Mr, F, Mansfield. . Superintendent Willoughby, of the Dunodin office of the Provident Lifo Assurance Company, arrived from the south yesterday to take charge of the Palmorston North district of tho company. On Saturday ho was presented by tho Dunedin field staff with a travelling rug as a token of their esteem. Messrs. Castcndyk and Focke, local agents for tho North German Lloyd Shipping Co., have received cable advice that Dr. Wiegand, director-general for tho N.D.L., died oil Monday last. Deceased was born at Bremen in 18-55, and bccamo director-general of tho N.D L. in 1892. It is understood that tho vacancy caused in the local dctcctivo staff through tho promotion of Dctcctivo Broberg to tho position of chief detective is to bo filled by tho transfer of Detective Kemp from Mount Cook to Lambton Quay. Cpnstablo Abbott, it is stated, will take up tho position of acting detective at Mount Oook. It is also understood that Acting-Dcfectivo Quartermain, of tho office of tho Commissioner of Police, has boon honoured with the title detective. A pleasing ceremony ' took place at tho warehouse of Mc-ssrs. Sargood, Son and Ewen, Ltd., last night, wjien Mr. C. Thompson, a popular member of tho staff, was presented with a dressing ease, also 'a silver cigarette case, by his fellow employees on the occasion of his severing his ■ connection with tho company in order to take a trip round tho world. Tlia presentation was made by Mr. Miller, entering room manager, who referred to Mr. Thompson as ono of the most genial aud obliging men ho had met with. . Mr, C. A. Wray, S.M., presided for tho last time 'at a sitting, of the Court ,;at Timaru yesterday., prior to retiring under tho Civil Servants' Act. There was a large' attendanco of justices of the peace, and members of tho Bar. Mr. J. W. White, senior counsel, and others delivered farewell addresses, and Mr. Wray made a feeling reply. He said ha very much regretted having to retire: Tho Court officials and police presented Mr.-Wray with a gold-mounted umbrella,—Press Association.
