GERMANY'S EXAMPLE.
SUBSCRIPTION BOXES EVERYWHERE. IflV TELEUItAI'n—IMIESS ASSOCIATION.). '. .„,., . Auckland, March 30. Whilst in Germany during his recent tour abroad Mr. C. C. MacAliiian, formoriy of Auckland, was particularly struck with the universal enthusiasm prevailing as 'regards the nation's navy. "On nil tho boats and in public places," ho said to a "Herald" representative, "we-saw boxes for subscriptions to the navy. There was real enthusiasm in all parts, and amongst all classes overywhoro tho peoplo evinced a keen desiro that a great navy should, be built up. The amount subscribed for this object privately by Gcrmana is enormous. They are talking in New Zealand," said Mr. MacMillan, "of presenting a Dreadnought to England. What I suggest is. that this idea of the German people should be taken up here. There might bo subscription boxes . placed tin all our ferry steamers on tho ' intercolonial and coastal boats, and iiij public places, so that people of all classes everywhere might bo given the opportunity of subscribing either to the Dreadnought "fund or towards a New Zealand Navy. It could bo dono horo equally as well as it is done all over the country in Germany."
