UNIONIST MAJORITY RISES SIX-FOLD. NAVAL ISSUE. THE EIGHT DREADNOUGHT DEMAND. (dy teleoravh—mesb association—coriraiGirr.) (Roc. March 31. 1.25 n.m.) London, March 30. Tho by-election ■ for Croydon (where tho Into Right Hon. H. 0. Arnold-Forstor, formerly Unionist Secretary for War, had, in 1906, a majority of C3B) resulted in a victory for Mr. Herman Hodjo (Unionist and Tariff Reformer) by 3948 votes. The voting was as follows:— Mr. H. Hodges (Tariff Reformer) ... 11,989 Mr. J. E. Raphael (Radical)... (1| 8,041 Mr. F. smith (Socialist) ... „, 866 Majority over Radloal 3,948 Tho election was fought on tho question of tho immediate building of tho contingent Dreadnoughts (four, in addition to tho Government's accepted four). Tho figures were announcod in the House of Commons during Mr. Balfour's speech in tho censure debate, and caused a sensation.
