ESSAY COMPETITION FOE THE SCHOOLS. The subcommittee of the Wellington Industrial Association set up to make arrangements Zhul R e ?»'"/.«on>P6tition for school frii iL ? • w,, 1 ." oonneotion with Industres -Week in Wellington met last evening. Mi. G. Bui, ivho occupied the chair, called on the headmasters of schools present (Messrs. Macmorran, Watson, and Foster) for suggestions as to what form the competition should take and how the prizes should bo allotted. Mr. Geo. Macmorran said that ho had indicated at the last meeting that they were prepared to give assistance in the direction indicated, but he thought that it would bo best if tho essays were written in tho school in order to avoid any possibility of outside aid. They had urst to know if the association was prepared to give prizes for each school. Mr. Ballinger moved that the association provide prizes (books) to the value of ss. each tor the schools to be included in the scope of the competition. In tho course of a discussion as to which schools should be included, Mr. Partridge suggested that it would be best-to vote £5 55., and divide it up amongst the competing schools. Mr. Jlacmorran thought that tho object to be achieved, which he took to bo the fostering of local industries, could bo attained without ottering prizes at all. "That could be got over," said Mr. Ballinger, by giving them a nice certificate." "Oh, no," said Mr. Macmorran, "if you givo anything, givo them prizes." Finally, Mr. Ballinger moved that £6 6s. be divided in prizes among the following schools: Muritai, AVadestown, Lowor Hutt, Epnni, Petone, Jolmsonville, Khandallah, Ngaio, Kaiwarra, Training College (Thorndon), Terrace, To Aro. Mount Cook Boys' and Girls', Clydo Quay, Newtown, South Wellington, Ros?neath, Kilbirnie, Maranui, Worser Bay, Island Bay. Brooklyn, Milchclltown, Northland, Knrori, and the elementary Soman Catholic schools in Wellington, Petonc, and Hutt—one prize to each school. This was carried. It was suggested that the subjects for the essays should relate to (1) the reasons why local industries should be supported, or (2) some particular local industry. All essays were to be written in school, under tho supervision of teachers, mid tho successful essay to bo certified to by headmasters. It was decided that the essays are to be written on Tuesday, April 20—the day following tho close of Industries Week.
