MISS AGNES WESTON.
From small beginnings come great endings. Miss Agnes Weston, who recently received a personal letter of thanks from tho King for her work amongst the sailors, began her great labours when quite a-young girl in a very small way by sending a letter of friendly counsel to a soldier on his way to India. The man was so delighted with the letter that he showed it to a sailor, who said he wished he could get such a message of kindly advice. So began the work which has grown, to such'proportions as the Sailors' Rests at Portsmouth and Devonport, where, it is said, she is simply idolised by the sailors. Queen Victoria was very interested in Miss Weston's work, and she has also received a sign of appreciation from the Glasgow University, who conferred on her the honorary title of Doctor of Laws.
