NEW AWARD CLAIMED. ~ Owing to the parties to the dispute in the carpentry and joinery trada having failed to arrive at an amicable settlement, the matter has been referred, s at the instance of the workers, to the Council of Conciliation. Wagstaff carpenter and joiner, Newtown; and Harry Welton, carpenter and joiner, Newtown. In all 2r3 employers have been cited. A summary of the claims of the workers'is as follows— The hours of labour shall be U hours in" each week-, each day commencing at 8 a.m. and nnisnmg at 5 p.m., except Saturday, when work shall ceaso at 12 noon. All journeymen carpenters or joiners, or carpenters and joiners shall be paid not less than Is. Bd. per hour lor any work done on any day. No carpenter or joiner shall be paid by piecework, nor shall any employer let his work labour only. Overtime shall be paid as' follows:—For the first two hours, timo and a quarter; after tho first two hours until 10 p.m., and on Saturdays until 5 p.m.,. time and a half; after these hours until 8 a.m. next morning, double time shall T, 6 pal o ," ori > done on Sundays. New Year's IJay, faopd Friday, Easter Monday, Labour XJay, and Christmas Day shall be paid for at the rate of double time. Travelling allowance is claimed in connection with work done more than 1J milos from tho chief workshop of tho employer, or, if he havo rm workshop, from his residence. When the distance requires any workman to sleep away from his home it shall be considered "countrywork," in respect of which, travelling allowance and 2d. per hour extra must b» paid, and sleeping accommodation provided. The expression ' country work" as regards employers in the city and adjoining suburbs of Wellington shall mean work situated more than ton miles by the nearest formed public road from tho Chief Post Office of the city, and as regards other employers in the radius within which the award takes effect shall mean work situated more than ten miles from the chief workshop of tho employer, or, if ho shall have no such workshop, thon from the residence of such employer. When men who have been employed for not less than four weeks are discharged, two hours shall be allowed them to put their tools in order; for any less period one hour shall be allowed.

Apprentices shall bo paid as under:—For tho first year, Bs. per week; for the second year, 12s. Gd. per week; for tho third year, 17s. 6d. per week; for tho fourth year, 235. per week; for tho fifth year, .£1 13s. per week. The proportion of apprentices (o journeymen shall not exceed ono to every three journeymen, or fraction of three. Tho period of apprenticeship will bo five years, but three months' probation shnll bo allowed. Employers shall employ members of the union in preferonco to nonmembers provided thnt thero nre members of the union equally qualified with non-members to perform the particular work required to bo done nnd rcadv and willing to undertako it. Tt shall bo a sufficient compliance with this clause as regards employers in Petonn and Hutt if they emplov members of the Hutt and Perono branches of tho Amalgamated Sncictv of Carpenters' and Joiners' Industrial Union of Workers. ■
