PALMERSTON NOTES.
It is reported that a great deal of shoplifting is at present going on in l'almerston, advantage being taken of the numerous sales now in progress. One firm reports having caught a young man. in the act of walking off with a number of ties stowed away in tile insido of his waistcoat. When taxed with the. theft, ho paid for the goods and quickly left the premises.
At Thursday's meeting of tlio Provincial Executive of the Farmers' Union, tho following members were- present:—Messrs. J. G. Wilson (president), W. J. Birch (Marten), W. Mathcson (Ekctaluinn), G. Wheeler (Feilding), J. H. Escott (Woodvillc), J. It. M'Lennan (Waitnna West), A. E. Russell, and Captain Hewitt (l'almerston). Air. ISirch brought up the question of tho scarcity of sheep trucks, and tho consequent difficulty in getting stock railed expeditiously, and it was decided, after discussion, that in consequence of tho dilliculty under present arrangements of removing stock the Minister for Railways bo written to suggesting tho advisability of running night trains two or thrco times a week during tho months of January, February, and March, for tlio purpose of carrying stock to the freezing works from tho AVest Coast of tho North Island. Tho High School Board of Governors has accepted the tender of the Union Timber Company for the erection of tho new technical school. There wero ten tenders sent in, the successful linn's price bein" £5090.
