'At tho meeting of tho Hospital Board this week, correspondenco was received stating that a certain family, who havo been in receipt of charitable aid for some time past, and over whom litigation is pending between fcho Palmcrston and Hawera Hospital Boards, had been left estato worth £350. Tho matron roported that Misses Fraser and Carmichaol had been appointed probationers, and recommend that Nurse Davies be jetained on the staff at anxincrcased salary, ,Vith th© position of senior nurse; also that Probationers Schmidt and Zeigler had given liatisfaction, and recommending their being placed on the permanent staff. The rccomoiondations wore adopted. A doputation, consisting of tho. Rev. D. Ilird, M.A., Wessr3. J. Robertson, L. Bittelmcyer, and C. N. Clausen waited on the board in reference to tho administration of charitable aid in tho district. The deputation was the outcome of a meoting held by, residents of Palmcrston recently. Mr. Robertson said that tho meeting had considered that tho preBont method of administering charitable aid was not right, as »ihoro was too much power centralised. Tho 'Rev. D. Bird said that ho had attended the meeting and, after hearing what ,was said, he did not sco why tho Pajmorston Board should not adopt the principle which was in vogue in the large centres, where an executive dealt with all cases, instead of one man. Tho matter was held over till next meeting., v. The importance of Palmcrston as a distributing centre was demonstrated on Wednesday, when 11 hags of letters, comprising the whole of tho English mail for Wanganui, Taranaki, and Hawke's 'Bay> was sent up from Wellington to bo sorted at.the local office. The work was expeditiously performed, and tho mail sent forward by cho afternoon trains. In addition tho local English mail was dealt with. An alarm:of fire was given just beforo one o'clock on Thursday morning, it being discovered that a. four-roomed, cottage in .Tram Street was ablaze. The Fire Brigade was quickly in attendance, and had tho flames under control in a few minutes, though they had a good hold. Tho house was owned and occupied by Mr. H. P. Brightwoll, who has been,at Woodville lor.four or five days. - The causo of the firo is: unknown. The insurunces were £200 on the house in the .State offico, and £15 on a detached washhouso. Tho insurance on the furniture is not ascertainable. '■ ■■ '.■"■' • There was. a very, good attendance at the meeting convened by. tho Employers' Association on Wednesday nigh,t to meet Mr. W. Pryor, tho employers' organiser, and hear his address on matters affecting the interests of employers. About seventy members were present, and, at the conclusion, of the address, a number of questions-were asked and answered, and a hoarty vote of thanks passed to the speaker. A number of new members joined the Manawatu Association as the result of the meeting.

They received £113 from the recent bazaar. Mr. D. C. Humphrey has presented the brigade with a stop watch for use in tho competititiong. A thousand feet of now hose has been .added, to the plant. Fireman Bilby was complimented on winning tho silver cup for tho owi-man competition. The treasurer reported a credit balance of £22 16s. Bd. in hand. Fireman Webster gave a report of tho recont competitions and conferenco at Auckland.
Miss Dunn has been appointed librarian at Ti'oytown, vice Miss Robinson, resigned. ' EKETAHTJNa. Tho Eketahuna Lodge of Druids, of which Br. B. Donnelly, of Wellington, was the bunder, celebrated its fifth anniversary on Wednesday evening with a smoke concert, fhere was a largo attendance, and the ftinciion passed off successfully. Tho Eketahuna Boroujjfi Council decided in Wednesday evening, In face of a letter deceived from the Hon. A. W. Hof;g as to Victoria Hospital being made- a charge on the general fund of tho Charitable Aid Board, to wjite to tho Masterton Borough Council, expressing its willingness to secede from tho board, and create a separate, country controlling body; also to ask that a scheme for their direction bo formulated. The domain recently taken under tho control of the Borough Council was made public uso for tho first timo this week, when the A.O.F. Lodge held its sports gathering and band contosfc, The weather was fine, and
there was a large attendance of country visitors, over £28 boing taken at the gates. Tho running handicap was won by A. Morrison, of Pahiatua. The first threo events of tho band contest, in which Kaiparoro, Hastwell.ivnd Eketahuna bands took part, created considerable interest, tho points being as follow.—Hastweil (Bandmaster Larsen), IGS; Kaiparoro (Bandmaster Hansen), 158; Ekotaliuna '•(Bandmaster Schultz), 147. SHANNON. On the bowling green on Wednesday afternoon tho holders of the Kinniburgh leathers defeated a rink of Levin bowlers by M points to 11. Tho holders aro Messrs. Olc son, Roach, Esson, and Knowlcs (s.), and the challengers wcro Messrs. lliornc, Hankins, S. Hall, and F.' Rowe (s.). Mr. R. W. Taylor aud Mr. C. Duncklcy aro in tho final of tho tennis tournament for Mr. T. Dunckley's trophy. Mr. It. W. Taylor journeyed to Palmerston'North on Friday to present a petition for the establishment at Shannon of a bfanch of tho Bank of New Zealand. A bazaar in aid of the funds of the Presbyterian Church was opened on Thursday, m tho Town Hall by tho Rev. I. Jolly, of Palmcrston North. A special feature was the horticultural display—tho first of tho kind held in tho district—for whose inception Mr. E. J. Jndd was tmninly responsible. Mrs. \V. M. Clark, of Levin, was judge of the domestic exhibits, and Mr.i W. H. Taylor, of the Experimental Farm, Weraroa, judged tho fruit,, vegetable and flower dis-, play. OTAKI. A sharp' shock of earthquake was felt here at 1.23 p.m. yesterday. It lasted several seconds. The local bowling green presented an animated appearance on Wednesday afternoon, tho occasion being a match between Levin and Otaki. Unfortunately tho visitors arrived with only six players, and, against these, the local' men scored' a decisive victory. During the day a number of local ladies dispensed afternoon tea.
The horticultural show was continued on Wednesday night, when there was a largo attendance of patrons,' all of whom wore much taken with the array of exhibits. The show was opor again on Thursday. A meeting of tho Horowhomia Cricket Association was hold on Wednesday night. Present: .-Messrs. / Naughton (chairman), M'Meekan, M'Bain, r.nrl Atkins. Shannon and Paraparaumu were unrepresented. A rumour has gained currency here that tho Auckland-Wellington express will, atop at Otaki on and after April 1. Inquiry from a fairly well-informed source indicates that this will really be the case. FEATHERSTON.'. H., Saunders on her retirement from the position of secretary, a-position' which she lias efficiently filled for tho past seven years. Whilo three motorists were coming from tho railway station, they had ono of those little experiences 'hat adds to the excitement of motoring. They were coming along at about ten miles an hour, and mado to turn tho comer.leading up to the station. Tho steering gear was put right over and stuck there, swerving the ear into the corner post. A passenger in the back seat was thrown into tho front scat, and tho two in the front seat were thrown against tho dash board. Strange to'say, no damago was sustained by the car beyond a bent rod in tho steering gear. The passengers were unhurt, and" attcr pushing tho car into tho road, the journey was continued.
Two cases of extreme poverty wero brought under tho notice of Tub Dominion representative- this 'wcok. One is a case where ~,, »T PlK ' lfc children living in the family, the father is out of work, and does not contribute much towards tho support of the Family. Tho mother works very hard all day to look after the children, and at night sleeps on a very poor bed, with one blanket and an old rug for covering. Tho second case is of a woman who is married to a delicate man. He had work somo distanco away, and used to ride a horse every morning to got there. Recently tho horse fell and injured its knees so much that it was unfit for further work. The man was thrown out of work, and has not bwn able to obtain any since All effort is being made to provide some help in these two cases.
