Since tho opening of tho Main Trunk railway servico through to Auckland there has been a falling off in the number of passengers going via New Plymouth to Onehunga. Tho two shipping companies engaged in that service—the Union Company and the Northern Shipping Company —have, therefore, decided on a considerablo reduction in fares between' New Plymouth and Onehunga, commencing from April 1.. Tho saloon single and return fare will bo £1 and £1 15s. respectively, and tho steerage single and return 15s. and £1 2s. 6d. respectively. Tho fares between Wellington and Onehunga, via 'New Plymouth, are also reduced, the single saloon being £2; saloon return, £3 155.; steerage single, £1 10s.; and • steerage roturn, £2 12s. 6d. In the past a daily service has been maintained between New Plymouth and Onehunga, but tho shipowners have decided that, for tho winter running, they will dispatch only four boats per week—two each. ■ The vessels to be employed in the servico will bo tho Earaiva and Rotoiti. The Rotoiti will arrive in Wellington on a Wednesday morning and leave the same evening for Now Plymouth and Onehunga, while the Rarawa will trade between New Plymouth and Onehunga only. To maintain tho cargo service tho Corinna will be dispatched from Wellington and vice versa once every two weeks. ' The Koonya, -which usually calls at Nelson en route to tho West Coast in ■ her fortnightly trip, will be diverted and call at New Plymouth instead of Nelson. The Pukaki, at present engaged in tho_ same running as the Koonya, will leavo' Wellington fortnightly for Picton, Nelson, and West Coast ports. The Union Company have decided to dispatch the Eotoiti from New Plymouth for. Onehunga on Thursdays and Saturdays, and' she will leavo Onehunga on Fridays for New Plymouth only, and on Mondays will como through to Wellington via New Plymouth. Next Wednesday tho Rotoiti arrives m Wellington and withdraws for overhaul. Mcanwhilo the Takapuna arriving in Onehunga on April 2, instead of coming through to Wellington, comes to New Plymouth only, and leaves there on Saturday, April 3, for Onehunga, taking up tho •Rotoiti's run. Sho leaves Onehunga again on Monday, April 5, for New Plymouth and Wellington, arriving here on April 7. when she withdraws, and .the Eotoiti commences ho regular winter running. Thero is no information from Auckland about the Northern Company's altered time-table, butit is supposed the Earawa will leave Onehunga on Sundays. Thursdays for Now Plymouth, and Now Plymouth on Mondays and' Fridays.

After being absent from port'for several weeks, the Government steamer Hinemoa returned'to port yesterday. Messrs. Flynn and Ruxton, chicf officers of the Weathersfiold and Komata, are to exchange positions to-day. It is expected that the Blenheim trader Waihi will resume running this week. Yesterday she was placed on tho slip for cleaning and overhaul. At ten o'clock yesterday morning tho Union Company's steamer Mapourika readied Greymouth. She was timed to sail at ten o'clock last night for Wellington, via Wcstport. According to an Australian oxchango tho Star of Now Zealand, which waß fixed to take the berth at New York under tho auspices of tho United Tyser Line, lias been withdrawn from that engagement, and will now depart from London on April 8, for Melbourne, Sydney, and New Zealand ports.

When tho steamer Cape Corso was on her last voyage from Newcastle to Hong-Kong she passed two rocks with patches of broken water arouud them. They bore from Maty Island about north 28dog. west, distant about 14 miles. Their approximate position would be latitude 1.31 south and long. 143.40 east. They were observed as the Cans Corso was approaching Maty Island from the north-west.
