EASTBOURNE BOROUGH COUNCIL.
A meeting of the Eastbourne Borou E h Council was held yesterday, when there were present: The Mayor <Hr. J\ G . Bolton), Councillors Banks, Foley, Howdeu, Shortt and Dr. Al'Kenzie. A discussion took place on the lighting of the borough. Councillor Foley moved that ntteen kerosene lamps be erected on the mam road, and that a large-sized burner be obtained, the lamps to be on the lines or the one under experiment. The Mayori think we ought to do something; we have been experimenting long enough." The motion was carried. The clerk reported that a pound would cost £32, but the matter was allowed to stand over.
For the purpose of providing the public with free access along the beach, the following motion was carried: "That the council acquire, under the Public Works Act the strip of land lying between tho sea and the section subdivisions at Rona Bay, and extending from Rocky Point to near the Fabian Street Wharf, provided that the council can legally take such land without the necessity for acquiring other land adjacent thereto." The city Town Clerk (Mr. J. R. Palmer) advised the council that the Lands Departs ment had had a valuation made of the bush at Day's Bay, which was given at £6 per acre, or £3738 for the 623 acres. The cooperation of the Eastbourne Council was asked in the purchase of the land at the valuation stated. No action was taken in tho matter. A letter was received from the Ferry Company stating that when the boundaries of the'borough were gazetted, section 35 belonging to the company, an area of 25 acres, was erroneously included, evidently being confused with another section of the same number belonging to the Education Depart, mont. The company proposed to move under Section 118 of the Municipal Corporations Act to have the section excluded from tho borough, and the council was asked if it had any objections. It was decided to reply that the council had no objections to the proposal. . The subject of a superannuation fund for the benefit of employees of municipal councils, county councils, and harbour boards was brought up by a letter from Mr. T. F. Martin, who asked if the council was prepared to join in the establishment of the fund. It was decided to tako no action at present.
