Tlicro was nothing significant in tho ai pect of tho old hoad office of tho Wellington and Manawatu Railway Company on Thorndon Quay yesterday to warrant tho suggestion that anything untoward was taking place, yet between tho hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. tho Now Zealand shareholders recoived no less a sum than £209,000, heing part payment for their shares to the amount of £2 15s. per share, Tho task of tho liquidators yesterday was rv simplo one, merely tho drawing out of cheques to tho fortunato owners, many of whom dropped into tho oflico in person to receive their duo. Mr. Jas. Hannay, ono of tho liquidators, stated that they had been kept going steadily all day, and at that time (4.15 p.m.) wero preparing and sending out tho cheques to country (shareholders. It will bo remembered that at tho final meeting of tho company tho chairman (Mr. John Kirkcaldie) stated that thero wero still a few assets to realise, and thero would probably bo a further 4s. Gel. or ss. per share, heforo tho business of liquidation was at an end.
