ARE RAILWAY STAFFSADEQUATE?
9 ; A RETIRED OFFICIAL'S OPINION, (ny I'ELEGitAni—ruEss association.) Auckland, March 22. In giving evidence before the Railway Appeal Hoard to-day, Mr. \V. Crombie, formerly stationmaster at Auckland, but now retired, alluded to the inadequate staffing .on tlio Auckland railway section. Ho stated that tho reason why porters were kept on tho trains on guards' duty, when they were not considered actually competent to run trains, was because of tho chronic inefficiency ana inadequacy of tho staffing service. This was a recognised fact, and ho had made frequent appeals to his superior olficers on this scoro, believing, that, in tho interests of safety, it was advisable that the state of nlfairs should not bo allowed to continue. Counsel for the Department (Jfr. Davidson) asked if tho inadequate state of tho staff, as far as numbers were concerned, was not a result of an unanticipated increase in business, to which Mr. Crombin replied that, as soon as such a state of affairs arose, the Department should have niado provision accordingly. Eventually ho admitted that tho causo \vas as sugyosted by Mr. Davidson.
