FOR TRAINING.
» TWELVE MONTHS IN ENCLAND. FOUR OFFICERS SELECTED. Some time ago, applications were invited from officers of tit© New Zealand Defence Forces who wero desirous of proceeding to England to undergo a twelve months' course of training, with a view to being 'appointed to the New Zealand Instructional Staff. The conditions of appointment fixed tho age limit as from 21 to 30 years of age, and all candidates were required to show two years' commissioned service, and that they were still serving. Applications closed on February 16 last, and from tho list of candidates the New Zealand Council of-Defence selected four for tho approval of Cabinet, which has now announced the names. They are:— Captain and Adjutant J. E. Barton, Second Regiment, Auckland Mounted Rifles. - Captain and Adjutant S. A. Crant, First Battalion Auckland Infantry. Lieutenant' W. D. Robinson, Dunedln Engineers. Captain J. H. Wliyto, Asslstant-Quar-tcraiaster-Ccsicraf, Auckland Military District. Captain Barton holds the certificate of the military school of instruction, one r-oursc, and has passed for captain. Captain Grant holds the certificate of the military school of instruction, two courses, and has passed for captain. Ho has served as a lieutenant with tho New Zealand forces in South Africa, and acted as range officer at Trentham for two years. Lieutenant Robinson holds the certificate of the Military School of • Instruction, three courses, passed with distinction in musketry and tactics, and passed for lieutenant. Captain Wliyto has seen service as a lieutenant in South Africa, has passed for captain, and holds tho certificate of the Military School of Instruction, one course. All four officers wero highly recommended by the officers commanding their respective districts and their regimental commanders. They will be required to resign their volunteer commissions, and will be recommissioned as lieutenants in tho Now Zealand militia. Before proceeding abroad they will bo required to servo for three months with tho Permanent Force at headquarters, Wellington, with a view of obtaining experience, and to pass a final general and practical tost to the satisfaction of tho Selection Board. On completion of tho proposed course and on return to Now Zealand, they will bo required to serve on the instructional staff, and appointed to tho rank of captain in tho Now Zealand militia. Pay will bo as for lieutenants, on first appointment—£l7s per annum. Passages will be paid by tho Department and an allowance of 2s. 6d. per day whilst on board ship, in addition to which tlloy will receivo 10s. per day whilst in England in connection with tho course, provided no quarters aro provided by tho Imperial authorities. In the event of quarters being provided by tho Imperial authorities, tho allowance will bo 7s. 6d. per day as from date of landing to date of departure from England. Tlioy will also bo required to enter into an agreement with tho Department to continue in tho service of tho New Zealand Government for a period of at loast thrco years on completion of tho course and on return to New Zealand; and, on tho other hand, the Department will guarantee employment for tho above-mentioned |>eriod of three years as an officer ill tho New Zealand Defence Forces.
